Go Into the Light! - Tips on Scheduling a Session

One of the most frequent questions when booking a session is - when is the best time to book a natural light session? Well, it’s all about the light. I often tell my clients, the further away from noon we can be, the better, but it also depends on the time of year and length of the day. I keep track of sunset times through an app on my phone and sometimes a sunset session can be as late as 8pm or as early as 4 pm, depending on the time of year.

As the sun moves throughout the day, and the angles change, you get different effects. It can be hard to balance the harsher light during midday. Looking for some shade is an option, however even then you tend to get “hotspots” on your clients or a strong color cast from the trees or buildings surrounding them because even the shaded light is bouncing back on them from the harsh sun.

If your session is all adults or a senior, it is easier to pull off. If you have kids, and they like to be active, keeping them in the safe zone is difficult. Booking a session later in the day or very early, allows more even, soft light and the ability to shoot freely in a larger area.

I typically shoot outdoor sessions with the sun slightly behind my subjects, giving them a rim light around their face and body to separate them from the background. Finding early or late light, when the sun is at a very low angle in the sky, gives the subject a soft warm glow rather than harsh highlights. It also makes the rest of the light, on the subjects face, etc., far more even.

When thinking about morning sessions, many people request 10 am, which is doable, but remember that is only 2 hours from noon and by the time you finish the sun will be almost overhead. It is difficult to get up and get going really early, but the beauty of it is that your done with your day so early. I also find that many little ones are morning people, so that’s a bonus!

One great way to illustrate what light does at different angles is to use a flashlight and shine it in different directions to imitate the sun. If you hold it directly over your head and shine down, you get big black hollows where your eyes should be. That is what the sun does at noon when it is directly overhead!!

There is science behind all of this, of course. The short answer is - different colors travel faster, the sun is at a lower angle, thus further away at sunset leaving the longer yellow, orange and red rays more visible to the eye, plus dust particles and pollution come in to play and cause “scattering”. Anyway, you get the idea!

I hope this information helps you to schedule your next session!

Fall Session Advice

Fall is such an amazing time for so many things, not the least of which is a family photo session! The clothes are amazing this time of year and are maybe a little more forgiving for some of our body types (mine!) than summer clothes. Your hair and makeup actually stay in place now that the humidity is gone and it’s the perfect time for capturing a great image for your Christmas cards. I’m sharing my advice on a few ways to get the most out of your fall session.

Be silly and have fun!

PLAN AHEAD

Fall is so popular, book in advance! Make sure to think ahead about travel plans, ball games, your child’s sports and social schedule, etc. Also consider nap times when choosing time of day, if you have little ones.

Don’t leave your outfits until the last minutes either. The last thing you want is to feel stressed the day of your session. Lay everything out in a spare room - tops, pants, dresses, socks, shoes, accessories. This is a great time to check the balance of your outfits too.

OUTFITS ARE ALL ABOUT BALANCE

When choosing outfits for a whole family group, my advice is to always choose the hardest to please first. In my family, that’s me! Moms are often the most self conscious person in the group, so plan your outfit first, then build the family around it. Maybe your partner is pickier, so start and go from there.

I’ve never been a fan of overly matching outfits. I prefer a mix of patterns, textures and colors. Try to keep colors with the same feel - all jewel tones, all cool tones or warm tones. For example, don’t mix a cool toned purple with a warm brown tone. You can always look at the color wheel to find complimentary tones too. Mix sweaters with denim, solids, florals and plaids, corduroy, etc.

This is a great example of mixing colors, textures and patterns. There are a couple of solids, a couple of sweaters, a couple of plaids in different patterns and a little lace too. All the colors are warm tones. Red and green are complimentary on th…

All the colors are warm tones. Red and green are complimentary on the color wheel (hence Christmas!), this is a less literal interpretation of red and green with a dash of blue. Perfect!

This mom managed to combine grays, plaids, camo and sequins! And it was perfection. We chose a white concrete urban setting to compliment the look.

OTHER WAYS TO PREPARE

When you’re getting ready, make sure your clothes are pressed if needed. If any bare legs are showing, make sure to moisturize! Even for men and kids, a little lip balm is helpful for all that smiling, especially during fall when the air is more dry. Double check mouths and noses right before the session. For blemishes, you are better off not caking on the makeup. Lightly cover it and let me know to be on the lookout when editing.

Can’t you feel the love in this one? It’s not a perfectly posed shot, but it’s perfect for them. Who needs perfect anyway?

DON’T STRESS!!!

When you’re stressed it shows. Family photo sessions have a reputation for being stressful. One way to overcome that stress is to let go of your expectations. If you have “that one photo” in your mind, well you probably aren’t going to get it. Let go. Have fun with your kids. Keep it light on the way to the session. Kids are smart and intuitive and your stress will transfer to them.

My favorite family shots, every time, hands down, are the candid, loose shots where everyone is playing and having fun. I’m there to help you get into that mode but it’s up to you to run with it. Don’t wait for me to give you every direction. Think about the silly things you do to make your kid laugh and do them! On the flip side, don’t be afraid to share a serious or sweet intimate moment with your kids or partner, hugging, rubbing noses…you get the idea.

Now go book a session and get ready for a great time!

Everyone’s in love with the newest addition to the family and it shows!

The Joy of Spring Sessions

We’re suckers for spring photo sessions! Bright tulips and daffodils, young green grass, and longer days all create beautiful backdrops for spring photos. Early spring is so full of life and promise. Those first few days in the great outdoors, appreciating every speck of color, breathing in the crisp spring air… there’s really nothing better.

We also think spring sessions are a great life hack. Not only do you get precious memories to cherish for years to come, you can also use your photos to create easy and thoughtful gifts for Mother’s Day and Father’s Day! What parent wouldn’t be thrilled to receive a canvas print of their little ones?

Here are a few of my favorite shots of little ones in the springtime - enjoy! And if you’re interested in scheduling a springtime shoot - click here!
